This massive concrete infrastructure from the 60’s was conceived for science students, being largely disapproved until today because of its poor energetic performance plus the look of an old modern icon with no relation with its environment. The project requires a sustainable ‘fashion emergency’ in order to continue operating in a more efficient and functional way.
My idea was to add infrastructure around the building and destroy as little as possible, that is, a sort of new skin. In the south façade that skin becomes so deep that it is more like a new building right next to the tower. This new infrastructure is a large veranda with a series of terraces with trees, extensions of the classrooms that would improve social and educational interactivity. This forest-veranda acts as a heat catcher, reducing the costs of heating in winter and providing the students the sense of being connected with nature among trees and sunshine all year round.
